On June 28th, 2015, I created the twitter account, @GovGoogles.
The premise of @GovGoogles is best summed up in the account's descriptor.
'Using the latest metadata from Canberra, we bring you the current Google search trends from Parliament House.'
The account blew up within days, featuring in The Age, The Daily Mail UK & Pedestrian.
It currently has over 60,000 followers including a vast number of Australia's journalists, reporters and news media.
It’s become a political institution in Australia, with many publications, journalists and social influencers referencing the account on a regular basis.
MEDIA COVERAGE
@GovGoogles was quickly picked up by media in Australia, and also the UK, with articles featuring across the entire Fairfax network, including The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. @GovGoogles has also appeared in The Daily Mail UK, The Guardian, Buzzfeed, Mashable, Huffington Post, Pedestrian, The Lad Bible, UniLad plus more.
CULTURAL IMPACT
It never crossed my mind for a second that a random twitter account I created on a whim would become so entrenched in Australian political culture.
The accounts has appeared in every form of media you can think of and at numerous rallies and protests across the country.
It’s at the point now where even if I wanted to stop the account, I’m not sure I could.
