I had just finished AWARD School.
The brief to myself was ‘get a job in advertising.’
The end result was this.
A gumtree ad for a shitty old BBQ that went viral across the world.
MEDIA
If you google 'enchanted bbq', you'll find it appearing on countless other websites, forums and blogs.
According to LinkTally, it was shared over 70,000 times on Facebook alone, and over 300 times on Google+, which covers almost the entire user base.
IMPRESSIONS
I received over 600 texts and e-mails, which was impossible to manage. Some even made me consider taking out a restraining order.
They ranged from touching comments from strangers telling me 'they really needed a laugh right now' and that the ad had 'made their day', all the way through to marriage proposals and the odd dash of creepiness.
The ad trended across all forms of social media, and was a big talking point on Twitter. It was even tweeted by Google's Marketing Director, Marvin Chow.
And most bizarrely of all, it even inspired a piece of 'fan art'! That's the BBQ sitting atop the mountain.
And if you're wondering, yes, I did sell the BBQ, but the real kicker was the multiple job offers I received, including some from overseas.
